Wedding Pro Wednesday: Getting Your Business in Order

It’s the top of a new year and that means new client calls, new contracts and a whole new slew of brides. Now is the perfect time to create a whole new way of doing things in your business by making it a priority to carve out time to work ON your business vs. IN your business.

In many ways having a business is a lot like having a marriage or, really any relationship: there are good times and bad times, and times when you feel amazing about it and times when you don’t feel as amazing. And, often, the times when we feel a bit less amazing are when we are maybe too distracted by life to pay as much attention to the relationship… and things go from coasting to, sometimes, chaos. A few years ago, we were in a place where we felt really unhappy. At that time we read a book that changed everything for us: The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. At that time we recognized that we, personally, had fallen into a classic trap of working IN our business vs. working ON our business and were essentially employees at a crazy, disorganized, headless horseman of company. We spent so much of our time devoted to our couples and clients that we had completely neglected the grander structure of our actual business. One of the main things that we committed to at the time was to carve out one morning each week where we only worked on projects related to GROWING/perfecting/correcting our business… website updates, marketing, financial planning… whatever it might be.

This served us really well… so well in fact that last year we found ourselves SO very busy we forgot our own promise to ourselves! So, at the end of our season we decided to RE-commit ourselves to working ON our business as well as IN our business. Obviously, what that looks like to everyone is going to be different, but we invite you to resolve to do this in some way, shape or form for yourself! Maybe it’s a morning a week… maybe it’s 1 hour a day.. maybe it’s reviewing your contracts, or updating your blog or submitting more real weddings. To inspire you, we thought we’d put together a list of must read books and blogs every small business owner (and wedding professional) should be reading!

Must Read Business Books:
I’d already recommended the E-Myth, but add to that list the page turning Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuck (which is a must read even for people who WORK for other people!), Switch by Chip and Dan Heath (a book I dedicated an entire blog post to, it was so great), Purple Cow by Seth Godin and the classic Blue Ocean Strategy… which is extremely helpful… but not as much of a page turner.

Must Read Business Blogs:
I love “You’re the Boss” on the New York Times site. I enjoy She Takes on The World. Always check out Grace Bonney’s Biz Ladies section and The Harvard Business Review Blog. Love the Innerpreneur. The Cindy Novotny blog.

Must Read Wedding & Hospitality Industry Blogs:
Bar none, Liene Stevens is the smartest woman in the industry and Think Splendid should be on your list. Her Splendid Sundays offer a recap of all the stuff you may have missed that week and make for lovely Sunday morning reading. The Business of Being Creative gives great, meaty advice. Wedding Market News is a great place to hear all about what is happening when.

    Thank you for sharing this! I just purchased the first one “the myth” one per your suggestion – business is not my “forte” so to speak so I think this topic is a great one for me to learn from ;).

    I have a whole list of blogs I try to get through during the week in order to “pinterest” and I daily follow Preston Bailey’s blog because he has a way of writing that makes you feel as though he is communicating directly with the event professional and I’ve learned quite a bit from him over the past few months but that’s about the extent of “growing my business” – haha ;). Wish you both well in the year ahead – abrazos! -mishka
