Wedding Styling Tips from the Emmy Red Carpet

So… another Red Carpet, another place for style inspiration for your wedding day look! I don’t like to criticize too much on this forum, so there is no real need to point out all the misses, so instead we’ll focus on the hits.  There were a lot of them and if I had to come up with a theme, it was Apropos Selections.  There was little ground breaking here that worked… but a lot of classic looks that were perfectly selected and made the wearers look divine.

First up, Christine Hendricks.  Let me say that it’s very easy, when this busty, to look large and in charge… in a bad way.  You really need to learn your body AND embrace a tailor. No one does these two things better than Christine Hendricks.  I particularly loved the elegant black Christian Siriano she wore.  The light lace sleeve and the deep V neck with cinched waist enabled her to showcase her famous curves while not looking like she had any extra bulk. In short, she is my HERO. All Images via The NY Daily News and The Huffington Post.

I think that Zooey Deschanel did a fabulous job of looking sophisticated while still retaining her trademark uniqueness in this stunning J. Mendel. Also, Zooey is a slight woman with a tiny frame, and this gave her some curves while not pretending that she is Christina Hendricks. Also, more than anything, I love that she looks REALLY PRETTY. Rather than go “off the wall” with her dress as some did (some of the Girls cast, anyone) Zooey was able to subtly introduce her quirk in a cute black and white french mani. The light tone of the dress and her dark hair and light eyes are a stunning combination.

Kerry Washington stood out like the star that she is in this Marchesa gown that could go straight from the runway to the aisle. A lot of petite woman want to wear gowns during these shining moments but can be overwhelmed by them. Kerry’s gown had length and a full skirt, but the light sheer fabrics enabled her to wear the multi-tiered gown, instead of the other way around.

With many women going for more “modest” cuts in their evening attire now a days, I was really excited to see Robin Wright from House of Cards in this modest, yet sexy gown from Ralph Lauren was a home run mix of modest, yet sexy. In white or Ivory I could see this as the perfect gown for a 2nd time or slightly older bride who is confident enough to know that less can often be much, much more.

Finally, while many didn’t appreciate the two toned Prada gown that Michelle Dockery wore, Mayra and I both thought it was the height of chic… from the back to the yoking on the rear of the skirt to the sophisticated palette of the gown. Michelle, whose figure is usually in the straight sheath gowns of the period of Downton looks so fabulous with some volume on her figure and it’s the perfect gown for a sexy back. Show this to me in white and ivory and I’ll be in heaven…

So who was your favorite at the Emmy’s this year? Any designers really stand out to you? Any stars wear a trend you’d want to replicate on your wedding day?
